YAAAYYY!! It's December!!

Hello everyone! I am sorry I don't have any doll pictures for you today:( I do have a couple of new dolls , but alas either my hubby or my children have made off with my camera once again. I am sure that those of you who read regularly have noticed that this seems to happen quite often , and it does. My 3 yo twins had an obsession for a while with my card reader, all told I bought 3 of them that they kept packing off , they ( thank goodness) have out grown it, but 1 of the card readers never did surface. I bought a new camera a while back and have only gotten to use it about 4 times and now it is missing too **sigh** I stashed it in the back of my desk drawer , guess I need a better hiding spot..lol. Oh well , I'll do some detective work this evening and I am sure I'll get the new pics by tomorrow. Family life is NEVER dull..lol. On the bright side it has given me a chance to share this awesome photo with you! I don't remember now where I found it , and I have NO clue who it is , but I do LOVE it! The little boy looks so serious! And just look at those boots , I'd love to have a pair like that to sit on my mantle. I love to look at old pictures!! There is a blog around here somewhere called "Picture of the day" ( it's on my reading list) that's really cool. It was a simpler time , and though I am sure that life wasn't easy at all , it was much "cleaner". I love to hear my aunt and uncle tell about things when they were young, and they aren't even that old. My aunt didn't know anything about the birds and the bees until she was in high school. My 2nd grader hears phrases from other kids that I have to google to even know what it means! ( It usually isn't good ). It kinda has me feeling old..and I haven't even bridged 30 yet. I have heard people say that kids grow up to fast these days, but I don't think that thats the case. They just learn all the bad stuff way earlier. I think society has gotten so caught up in giving the next generation more than what they had , that they have lost sight of the important things, like forming bonds and teaching their children to be self sufficient. I cannot count the number of people even at my age that couldn't boil water if they were starving to death and that's just plain sad. It seems cruel to me even though I am sure it wasn't intentional in most cases. Not teaching a child how to handle life is like cutting 3 legs off of a dog and then expecting it to hunt for it's self. These poor kids turn 18 and the world as they know it comes crashing down, they are suddenly responsible for everything . They have to be able to feed themselves , keep clean clothing , keep up with their homes, keep a budget , etc. and thats a lot for a child that never had to cook or do a load of laundry. My 11 yo old LOVES to cook, but he still hasn't hit a growth spurt to get him up high enough to use the stove safely ( he can't clear the burners and reach the knobs at the sametime) but I teach let him bake in the oven a lot. When he's done he has to help clean up , which he doesn't always like , but it's a good reminder that you have to take the bad with the good and that he'll have to clean up his messes when he is on his own. My 9 yo knows how to cook some things , but he isn't quite as into it as my 11 yo so he's not in the kitchen as much. They both help with laundry , and my 11 yo even helped me wire a 220 plug socket for our new dryer this weekend. He basicly just held things and watched but there is no teacher better than experience, they also LIKE to do it so what better way to learn? Now if I could just teach them to put things back where they found them ( like my camera ..lol ) then we'd be in good shape. Any way this is starting to sound more like a parenting blog than a primitives blog so I had better cut it short , but here's to raising the next generation of strong kids.

Hello again everyone! Here's my new Belsnickle Santa. He's all decked out in his burlap robe and ready to bring treats to the children. If you have never heard the legend of the Belsnickle, then I will tell you who he is in short... He is the grand father of our modern day Santa , and a part of Appalachain history. Belsnickle would often travel from house to house dressed in burlap with his face blackened out by charcoal dust. He would either deliver treats to good children or spank bad children with a switch. Every year the children would strive to be well behaved so that the belsnickle would bring them a treat instead of a spanking. So that he got to meet all the children, the Belsnickle would begin his rounds just after dusk on Christmas eve and would have been finished with his rounds by midnight. The belsnickle didn't wait until everyone was sleeping, in fact he came into the house to have cookies or cake and hot apple cider with the family. My Belsnickle Santa doll will be making his way to ebay very soon, I sure hope that the children there have been good..lol. Belsnickle is carrying his bag of treats in his left hand and a tree and a small doll in his right hand. He is dressed in a hooded burlap robe that has homespun wool yarn stitched around the edges. His eyes are small rusty jingle bells and his beard and eyebrows are made from natural sheeps wool that I hand washed myself. He is approximately 18.5" tall and is signed on his bottom.
I also finished a pair of snowmen today but photobucket apparently hates me because it will not let me copy the code so that I can post the picture here. I suppose I will try again later. I am all out of muslin and fiber fill so I am sending my DH out for more , and hopefully I'll have some new things to show you tomorrow evening. Have a blessed evening everyone!

Like mother like son

Hello everyone, I thought I'd share this beautiful cardinal with you folks . I did not make him. My 11 year old son did! I am so proud of him! He made this for a competition at school ( he got 2nd place). It took him a while to decide what to do , his ornament had to be WV wildlife of some sort and at first he thought of doing a bear, but decided that it wouldn't stand out enough on a christmas tree. The only things I needed to help him with were threading the sewing machine , and tieing off knots. He did the rest on his own! I told him that I was going to have to put him to work for me..lol. He has sewn a few things before and I let him experiment with my machine from time to time , but I think the competition brought out the best in him and he really amazed me. He will get his ornament back after Christmas and I told him that next year and every year after we would use his cardinal as our tree topper. I'll keep you updated on any thing else he makes.

Sorry folks :(

I have been through the ringer lately and have finally come out the other side..lol. The kids all had check ups due and follow ups for those, and then my poor old camera died:(( On the up side I did get a new camera and I LOVE it so far. Oh yeah, I am making some new things now too like Wax ornies , wood wick candles and grubby tapers. The pitch candles pic is a little dark..sorry I am still learning the controls on this camera. The sheep are some of my newer ornies , I also have skeleton keys, angels , santas and a manger set. I also set up a booth with Bonanzle , for those of you that haven't tried Bonanzle it is fantastic. I love that they alow you to accept money orders where some other places make you pay through their site. Here's my link if you'd like to CHECK IT OUT. G'NIGHT ALL

Old fashioned soap

Hello all , I am still alive. Sorry I haven't added anything new lately , I have been having problems with my back and can't manage to get much done. I can stand , I can lay flat on my back , but I can't sit for more than a few minuets . It's almost impossible to sew while standing. Thank goodness that it is finaly easing up maybe I can get something done now. No one entered the doll drawing :( so I guess that there is no winner. I did manage to find something to do while my back was out though, I made soap! It doesn't require sitting at all. My family loves it, it cleans my husbands hands better than store bought. One of my sons has some minor acne issues and it's helping to clear that up as well. My little ones like it too , but I think that that is just because "Mommy made it". Homade soap seems to have gotten a bad name from some soaps being very harsh on your skin , but as far as I can tell that is about as far from the truth as it can get. In fact it seems to be MUCH gentler than store bought and way less drying. I'll post pics soon!

Look what my husband brought me!!

My husband came home with this little guy this morning , he found him in the parking lot at work. This little fellow is so tiny , he must have just lost his tail. We put him in a pop bottle with some leaves and water , and took his picture next to a pen cap to show just how tiny he is. We are going to let him go this evening of course, much to the kids' dismay. They want to keep him. I told them that living in a pop bottle wasn't what was best for the frog and they agreed reluctantly. They have had a variety of critters , from craw dads ( we even had a babyone once) to turtles to frogs and every other thing in between. They know that they have to let them go but they always protest at least for a moment, so we take pictures. I just thought you all might enjoy seeing him.

New OOAK primitive sculpted dolls , Stella and Aramena

Hello everyone! I have been sculpting lately ( as you can tell) I really like the truly old time look that sculpted faces give my dolls. Don't worry though I'll still be doing my soft dolls as well. Here's what I have managed to make...

First there's Stella , doesn't she look well loved? She has stick arms and legs and a sculpted paper mache face. Her hair is homespun wool and is wicked into her head. Her dress is gathered and belted at the waist and is made from a vintage orange and blue flower basket fabric. Stella is about 16" tall.

Aramena has been to the sweets shop and bought herself a lolly pop . She is wearing a stained, singed muslin dress , her buttons are 6mm rusty bells attached by rusty safety pins. Her face is sculpted from paper mache and her lolly pop is sculpted from terra cotta clay that has been painted and grubbied. Her hair is wicked into her head and grubbied as well. Aramena is about 21"tall.

OOAK Primitive ornies and snowmen

Well it is official...I need another vacation. I have had trouble with photobucket for the last several days ( it apparently was my browser BTW ) . Then I took photos of all my new prim things and didn't notice that I didn't have my memory card in the camera. So I had to do it all over again. And to top it all off ...they turned out dark. Sorry folks , I may try to take new photos soon. On a lighter note I did manage to update my browser and conquer the photobucket malfunction:) obviously.

I just love these little birds , they all have glass bead eyes ( even though the eyes on the brown birds don't really show up in the pic) Their wings are hand stitched on and they have a stick "leg" . The snowmen are Mac and Cecil. They are both weighted and sit on their own. They have stick arms. Cecil has a pocket full of sweet annie and a rusty bell on his hat. Mac has 3 buttons down his front, and a hand stitched mouth. I hope you enjoy them! I am turning in for the night , it is already almost 2 am and I should have been in bed hours ago. G'Night all!!

Either way I am going to post lots of new things in the next few days even if I have to get a tinypic account to do it. Posting lots of new things also means that I will be having my 50th post this week...and my free doll giveaway!
